APARAJITA (Shankhpushpi)


Aparajita, Clitoria ternatea, unremarkably called Asian pigeonwings, bluebell vine, blue pea, howeverterfly pea, Kordofan pea and Darwin pea, shankhpushpi, maybe a plant species belonging to the family Fabaceae. Aparajita is a stunning blue-bell vine plant that's historically related to lord Vishnu. It is Delicate and seasonal, but abundant and simple to grow everywhere in India! This creeper has multiple medicinal and commercial values. It's utilized in Asian culture, broadly used in Ayurveda system of medicine.

  • Sanskrit name - Vishnukanta, yonipushpa, girikarnika, kokila

  • Marathi name - Gokarni

  • Hindi name - koyala

  • Gujarati name - Garnee

  • Tamil name - kakkanam

  • English name - butterfly pea, clitoria, winged leaves, bluebell-vine, kordofan pea.

Aparajita is one of the rare plants whose each and every part has benefits to the human body. Aparajita plant has bright green colored leaves, the colors of flowers are bright blue, lilac or sometimes white colored flowers.

The properties of Aparajita as per "Bhavprakash Nighantu Shloka’s"

आस्फोता गिरिकीस्याद्विष्णुक्रान्ताऽपराजिता । अपराजिते कटू मेध्ये शीते कण्ठ्ये सुदृष्टिदे ॥१११॥ कुष्ठमूत्रत्रिदोषामशोथव्रणविषापहे । कषाये कटुके पाके तिक्ते च स्मृतिबुद्धिदे ॥११२॥”

Shloka no 111-112, Guducyadivarg, Bhavaprakasha.

Meaning - The above shloka explains the property and actions of herb aparajita. It is pungent in taste and is heavy to digest in nature. It promotes intelligence and is cold in potency. It can be used to treat conditions like skin diseases, oedema, wound and poisoning etc.

Calcium, magnesium, potassium, zinc, iron, manganese. It is also rich in Sodium, it has many vitamins and antioxidants which provides many benefits to the human body.


Benefits and uses:

Aparajita has a deep meaning which is "The one who cannot be defeated", as per its meaning the plant has several medicinal benefits which can contribute to our health.

For migraines:

The root may used to treat migraines

  • How to use: Take a root, grind it, remove its juice and insert it into your nose. Take it for 2-3 days as per your pain. Take a root, make a paste of it and apply it on your forehead.

For fever:

If you’re suffering from Come go fever then aparajita is beneficial for it

  • How to use: Take a thick root and boil it in one glass of water for 10 mins and drink it. This helps in reducing fever

For cough:

If one is suffering from severe cough issues, this plant has benefits for it

  • How to use: Take a root of aparajita plant _ 4-5 kaali mirch + tulsi leaves (basil 2/3 leaves) grind it and boil it in a glass of water for till it becomes half

For tonsil:

It is said to be beneficial for tonsils

  • How to use: Take aparajita plant leaves (3/4) + Guava leaves (2/3) boil it in water. And gargle. You can also apply this paste on the exterior part of the tonsils.

For brain:

Aparajita plant is grouped under the Medya herb category in Ayurveda. It is referred to as the herb which helps in improving memory and learning.

So it is beneficial for children who are suffering from development problems.

It also plays an important role in curing dementia.

It is very beneficial for mental health, it helps relieve mental stress.

It helps the human nervous system make work more finely resulting in good concentration skills by aiding in circulation of blood in the brain.

Aparajita aids in anxiety and depression problems by maintaining human hormones in balance and Increases dopamine levels this results in having a good sleep, also staying happy.

Its root bark is administered together with the Nirgundi root bark with water.

Commonly used for hair care. You can use masks- It makes hair soft and shiny. If used as tea it makes hair stronger from roots thus reducing hair fall.

Side effects:

There are no side effects as such but overconsumption of Aparajita can lead to vomiting and diarrhea. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid blue tea or consume aparajita.
