How to aid a person with ELECTRIC SHOCK?

We often use different electronic gadgets in our day today life, while using them we may get a shock due to some defects, carelessness. The main reason is that we use wires and switches without insulation. Electric shock can be life threatening and might cause a death. It may destroy the muscles, nerves and tissues in the human body. It can cause burns and even the functioning of the heart.

There are two types of possibilities during electric shock,

  1. If the force of electric current is less, it will push the body away.

  2. If the force is more, the body gets attached to wire or the appliance used.

First aid:

(1) Switch off the Power Supply.

  • If any person receives an electric shock, immediately switch off the power supply by using any non conducting object like a wood stick.

  • If the victim gets attached to the wire or the appliance does not touch him directly, he must be separated from electricity using a dry wooden stick.

  • Try to separate the person from the current using non-conductive objects such as wooden or plastic broom handles, chairs, or rubber doormat.

  • Do not attempt to save victim near active high voltage lines

(2) Give CPR.

  • Call emergency, have a look at victim, check victim’s airway, breathing and pulse.

  • If the pulse has stopped or seems dangerously slow or shallow, give that person CPR, give an artificial respiration through the nose or blow air by the victim's mouth by closing the nose, place him in the open air to let him rest till the help arrives.

(3) If they are pale.

  • Put them on the floor, place their legs under any kind of stool, chair which is probably 6 inches high from the ground, cover them with a warm blanket so the body temperature comes down to normal

(4) Check for any other injuries.

  • BURN- if the victim has burns, remove any clothing that comes off and rinse the burned area in cool water until the pain subsides.

(5) Wait till help arrives.

NOTE:

  • DO NOT TOUCH THE VICTIM WITH YOUR BARE HANDS WHILE THE PERSON IS STILL IN CONTACT WITH SOURCE OF ELECTRICITY.

  • If you get any tingling, vibrative sensations to your legs from where you are standing, immediately hop to some safe place which gives bad conductance like wooden tables, rubber slippers and so on.

  • Do not touch the skin of someone who’s been electrocuted

  • Do not use any electrical appliances during shower

  • During the rainy season, stay away from electric poles and snapped wires.

  • Use insulated gloves before attempting any electrical work.
