PITTA DOSHA




















Pitta is a dosha which is made up of Water and Fire. Fire relates to the bodily heat energy, so basically Pitta dosha in the human body manifests in the form of Metabolism.

Qualities of Pitta:

पतं सनेह तीणोणं लघु वं सरं वम ।् pittaṃ sasneha tīkṣṇoṣṇaṃ laghu visraṃ saraṃ dravam |

The above Sanskrit quote is from Ashtanga Hydriyam, which mentions the qualities of pitta .

  • Sasneha - slightly oily, unctuous

  • Teekshna – piercing, entering into deep tissues

  • Ushna – hotness

  • Laghu – lightness

  • Visram – bad smell

  • Sara – having fluidity, movement

  • Drava – liquidity

These are the qualities of Pitta.


Functions of Pitta dosha in the human body:

  • Physical functions controlled and maintained by Pitta:

  1. Digestion.

  2. Absorption.

  3. Assimilation.

  4. Nutrition.

  5. Metabolism.

  6. Body temperature.

  7. Pores and Skin coloration.

  8. The luster of the eyes.

  9. Intelligence and understanding.

  • Psychological functions aroused by Pitta:

  1. Anger

  2. Hate

  3. Jealousy.

  • Pitta is present in most of the body organs and they are The small intestine, stomach, sweat glands, blood, fats, eyes and skin.

The human body constitution of Pitta dosha:

Physical aspect of constitution

  • Body frame: Moderate (not too thin, not too fine)

  • Body weight: Moderate

  • Skin: Soft, Oily, Warm, Fair, Red, yellowish

  • Eyes - Sharp, penetrating, Green, Gray, yellow

  • Teeth - moderate in size, soft gums, yellowish

  • Hair - Soft, oily, yellow, Early gray, Red

Physiological aspect of constitution

  • Appetite- Good, excessive, unbearable

  • Taste - Sweet, bitter, astringent

  • Thirst - excessive

  • Elimination - Soft, oily

  • Physical activity- moderate

  • Mind - aggressive, intelligent

Psychological aspect of constitution

  • Emotional temperament- Aggressive, irritable, jealous.

  • Faith - Fanatic

  • Memory- sharp

  • Dreams - Fiery, anger, violence, war

  • Sleep - little but sound

  • Speech- sharp and cutting

  • Financial status - moderate spends on luxuries

  • Pulse - moderate. Jumping like a frog

How to know if you are a pitta person?















Physical features of pitta people:

  • Pitta people are of medium height, have a slender body frame and may be delicate.

  • Their chests are not totally flat as of vata people. They have a moderate prominence of veins and muscle tendons.

  • Pitta people may have moles or freckles which are bluish or brownish-red in color. Muscle development is seen as moderate.

  • The pitta people may have skin color like coppery, yellow, reddish and fair. Pitta people's skin is said to be soft, warm and less wrinkled.

  • Hair is thin, silky, red and brownish in shade. But they have a tendency of premature graying of hair and hair loss is seen as excessive.

  • Pitta people may have eyeballs of color like gray, green, copper and brown. Their eyes are sharp. Eyeballs will be of medium prominence.

  • The nails are soft and smooth. Nose will be sharp and pointed. Nose tip tends to be reddish.

Physiological features of pitta people:

  • Pitta manifests in the form of Metabolism in the human body so these people have a strong metabolism, good digestion and they take large quantities of food, liquid which results in strong appetites.

  • Pitta people have cravings for sweet, bitter, astringent taste. They also enjoy beverages.

  • Pitta people sleep better than vata people, are of medium duration but uninterrupted.

  • They produce a large volume of urine with the faces are yellowish, liquid, soft and plentiful.Pitta humans will be inclined towards immoderate perspiring (immoderate sweating). Pitta people love to be in dark places. They do not tolerate sunlight, heat or hard work as well.

What is the nature of a pitta person?










Pitta people may have characteristics like:

  • Perfection: If we have to explain Pitta people in one word then it is “Perfection”. They need and want perfection in everything for that they are ready to do hard work and struggle to make it perfect.

  • Sharpness: Pitta people are very sharp in nature. They are very focused, hardworking. They grasp things easily.

  • Brave: Due to their perfect and sharp nature, they are very brave, aggressive and attacking and dominating. Pitta people are more competitive, they won’t back off until their work is done. They won’t quick easily either. Pitta people will prefer to die trying, but won’t give up.

  • Fearless :“न भयात प्रणमेत” This Sanskrit quote means “The person who is fearless” Pitta people do not afraid of anything. They work very hard to achieve everything but they are also ready and prepared to accept failures. They don’t give up easily. They won’t back off unless the work is done. Pitta people also have leadership quality.

  • Proud : “चिप ् रकुप” This word originated from Ayurveda for Pitta people. They have very proud nature. Pitta people appreciate, gives credit to themselves and love their own self. They like people who appreciate them but if someone says something bad or points out their mistakes…pitta people will correct them until they agree.

  • Competitive: Pitta people love to be perfect, that's why they have a competitive nature. They won’t harm anyone in the process but They intend to stay in first position no matter what. Pitta people don’t like to be second.

  • Tit for Tat nature: If pitta people have an enemy, they will make them try every possible effort to put down them. But then there’s soft and loving nature. Pitta people give love, effort, time, helpful, and commitment to their loved ones. They like to be the bigger person in the room.

  • Intelligence: They have high intelligence. Pitta people grasp easily and they won’t forget in the long term. Once Pitta people start something they will go deep into. In sanskrit, “मेधावी, पंडित” are the phrases used to describe pitta people meaning (A scholar and knowledgeable person)

  • Speaker: Pitta people have high knowledge. Due to their intelligence, bravery and sharpness they own the room by speaking only. Pitta people can explain things, perspective easily to others. (For example Motivational speaker)

  • Organized, clean freak: Pitta people tend to stay hygienic. They do not like their things unorganized. You will find Pitta people always washing, cleaning and organizing their surroundings. As usual they want to be perfect, neat and clean. Pitta people also advise , motivate and yell at others to stay the same. They are mostly social workers who tend to clean, organize the whole society.

  • Financial status: Pitta people have a lot of qualities that’s why they have medium financial status. More than vata people, they are stable. To be more financially stable people have to make sacrifices, compromise but since pitta people are brave, self proud they tend to do things on their own. This attitude may lead to financial instability. They have moderate knowledge in moderation as well. Besides this they are ambitious and may also have material possessions and luxurious life .Since they focus on being the best person they get impatient to focus more on knowledge.

  • Short tempered: Pitta people have heat. That’s why they get easily angry. But as fast as they get angry, hyper they will come back to normal easily. Since vata people also tend to be short tempered but they express anger only by talking. For pitta people, the talking doesn’t suffice, they have attacking nature so the fight may get physical. Better not mess with pitta people.

  • Loves to dress up: Pitta people are organized, loves to stay hygienic. They sweat excessively. We will find them using perfumes, cosmetics, and hair creams. Pitta people love to be Tip-top, Attractive and fashionable.

The main reason for pitta dosha imbalance is Emotional strain, anger issues, High temperature, excessive meat, alcohol consumption. White flour (maida) so basically pitta deals with metabolism in the human body. These are the factors that trigger the metabolism process.

The disorder happens due to imbalance of pitta dosha. Pitta imbalance affects the metabolism due to which people have to struggle with upset stomach, diarrhea and also heartburn. They burp frequently. Due to irregular metabolism, bodily chemical reactions get imbalanced due to this emotional stress.


How to balance your Pitta dosha?

So basically Pitta dosha deals with metabolism hence do not eat the food, beverage that results in stomach upset, diarrhea and so on. Now you know what triggers your body then it is easy to distinguish between what is effective and what not. Consult any ayurvedic physician or nutritionist and have appropriate nutrition.

  • Meditation will help stabilize the mind and anger issues. It will also help to think straight, rather than making wrong decisions while angry.

  • Pitta people have an aggressive nature. Doing any physical activity like sports, gym may control their aggressiveness.

  • Consult any Ayurveda Physician to know and have a proper plan If you feel your pitta dosha is getting imbalanced.

Always remember: A balance among the tridosha is extremely necessary for health. Every person will have these 3 energies but the one will have a higher proportion while the other two will have less. But Tridosha is present in each human body, one higher and two less.
